In developing countries around the world there are 121.8 million people in need of a wheelchair. Of this population only 10% actually have access to a wheelchair. This means that a staggering 109.6 million people do not have a wheelchair today. Due to the population rising rapidly worldwide an additional 145 wheelchairs are required every day.
|
The current wheelchair market does not cater to the needs of the developing world. The leading problems are the affordability and accessibility. In addition to this existing wheelchairs are difficult to store and not portable enough in the conditions around developing countries. Therefore there is an immediate need for a new design of wheelchairs that are affordable, lightweight and have the ability to adapt on varied terrains.

iLMUNDi is the first DIY, foldable wheelchair. It is designed for people with limited abilities in developing countries to provide them with the wheelchair they need. iLMUNDi is affordable, lightweight, foldable, durable and the first product of its kind.
|
The primary material of iLMUNDi is PVC pipes, reinforced with treated wood and PVC connectors. PVC pipes and connectors were chosen due the accessibility of the material in developing countries. It therefore enables the end user with the ability to easily change the parts of their wheelchair if necessary or if they become damaged. Creating an affordable, easily repairable DIY wheelchair.
iLMUNDi comes as a full, compact package which can be given to individuals and organisations in need of wheelchair. |
